How To Support Mr Sandman In Bringing You A Good Nights Sleep

Be considerate, after unloading his buckets of sand into your eyes to help you find your way to dreamy land, he hasn’t got time to hang around on your shoulder singing lullabies. Prepare for his visit to ensure you get a restful sleep:

  • You probably know this by now, but I will mention it none the less – don’t drink caffeine as it depresses the sleep hormone melatonin for up to 10 hours.
  • Alcohol might relax you at first but can cause anxiety later on.
  • Have a cup of bed-time or herbal tea instead.
  • Play quiet, calming music to assist you in winding down. Read the rest of this entry »

How To Avoid Over-Thinking

thinking woman

You’ve probably experienced your own spiral of thoughts that lead to aimless rumination and often results in feelings of anxiety and hyperactivity or sleepless nights, to name but a few effects.

Example: You’ve just comfortably tucked yourself into bed, even started to think about something tranquil and beautiful, when slowly, and at first unconsciously, distracting thoughts creep into your previously calm mind:

A “brilliant” creative idea pops up. How can I get started? What does it look like?

What about this dreadful meeting tomorrow? Am I sufficiently prepared?

Then pictures of the last horrific news report sneak in? How terrible that was….

As if that could stop the keen chatter in your head, you put your hands on your ears in a desperate attempt to escape this mental self-chatter.

But wait; here are some suggestions that really help to avoid over-thinking:

How To Create Your Own Guided Meditation Script

From time to time, I like to wind down and listen to a guided mediation CD to clear and refresh my mind. However it usually takes me a long time to choose the right CD. I have many relaxation recordings but only very few guided mediation CD’s. For me it is equally important that the background music suits me, that the voice is pleasant and the text is interesting and easy to follow.

So, during my last creative surge I wrote my own personal script. I remembered what I liked about the ones I previously listened to. They usually start with something like, ‘lay down and find a comfortable position’ and ‘don’t hold on to random thoughts but let them pass like clouds or balloons’. Initial sentences like this will prepare you for the journey ahead. Read the rest of this entry »

Here are some ways to consider when trying to improve your current mood:

Externally:
Plan Ahead
- Schedule your life to ensure there aren’t huge gaps or compressions later. This can mean scheduling high quality experiences if you find yourself frequently bored. It can also mean dividing large projects if you find yourself chronically busy.

Win-Win
- If you must perform an activity you think has low quality, that’s suboptimal. Find ways to reorganize your life so that jobs, chores and duties can become interesting high-quality experiences. Read the rest of this entry »

strawberry

Often we try to change bad habits on a big scale, especially at the beginning of the new year and set ourselves up for disaster. Instead try to implement small but easy changes as suggested by the Healthy Food Magazine:

It’s been said also that memory is more about helping us predict the future than dwelling on the past.
