Movies To Watch: Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky And The Media

film poster manufacturing consent
One major source of happiness for me personally is to have choices and live autonomously. Easy enough – or is it really? Not if you rely solely on news presented by mainstream media to supply you with views of the world and the state of society. It actually takes quite an effort to make up your mind and to choose sources of information that are not biased and paid for by advertisers with their own agendas.

The film is full of valid comments by Chomsky on issues such as media analysis, control of public opinion and free speech. Here are a two of my favourites:

I’m helping people develop intellectual self-defense… I don’t mean go to school, because you’re not going to get it there… It means that you have to develop an independent mind, and work on it. That’s extremely hard to do alone… The beauty of our system is that it isolates everybody. Each person is sitting alone in front of the tube. It’s very hard to have ideas or thoughts under those circumstances. You can’t fight the world alone. Some people can, but it’s pretty rare. The way to do it is through organization. Fun Stuff: Play Hang Stan

hang stan game
Playing is one of my hobbies and while I prefer to play games in company or outside; sometimes I also like to play easy online games like HANG STAN where you need to guess 70s, 80s music or classic movie titles.

It’s good, quick fun for those times in the office when you need to relax a bit.

Have fun.

If Being Critisised Remember…

  • Practise perspective. If someone disapproves of something you have said or done, try to remember: it’s about what you’ve done, not you; it doesn’t mean everything you’ve ever done is wrong; try not to let it become a major problem.
  • It’s normal to care what your co-workers think of you, but understand that if they criticise you, it may not be about you, but them. They may be feeling insecure or jealous, or they might have been criticised themselves and need to pass it on.
  • If your boss criticises you, it’s likely to be related to one incident. So work on the specific behaviour, and don’t jump to the conclusion that you are a useless employee or a bad person. Focus on your positive interactions. Tell yourself, in general, you’re doing fine.
  • It doesn’t matter how many good deeds you do, there will always be people who don’t like you. Accept your limitations, as you can’t win everybody over.

Into Every Life A Little Rain Must Fall

flower in rain

I’d like to dedicate this poem by Thomas Hardy to M.

The Darkling Thrush

I leant upon a coppice gate

When Frost was spectre-gray,

And Winter’s dregs made desolate

The weakening eye of day.

The tangled bine-stems scored the sky

Like strings of broken lyres,

And all mankind that haunted nigh

Had sought their household fires. Read the rest of this entry »

Friends Are Good For You – So Put On Your Best Smile And Do This…

Join a travel adventure. I did this myself a couple of times and always found some good lasting friendships. People tend to bond more easily when out of their comfort zone.

Take a class in a subject you feel passionate about and this way connect with people that share your interest and enthusiasm. Or sign up on Meet up where you can get in touch with like minded individuals in a place near you.

Get a dog. A dog is not only a good companion but also great for meeting other people every morning at your local park.

Track down old school mates and see if old bonds can be re-established. Read the rest of this entry »

Easy Recycling Craft Idea: Envelopes

This must be one of my favourite recycling projects: Creating colourful envelopes from old calendar pictures. The paper is usually a bit stronger than normal writing paper and hence perfect for turning them into resillient envelopes that can go on a trip around the world.

Time To Re-discover Your Sensuality

I think there are many reasons for taking some time out to re-discover your sensuality. It can boost your confidence, strengthen your resilience during strenuous times and make you feel at ease with your body and mind.

How about spending a day pampering your five senses: Sight, Smell, Sound, Taste and Touch

Transforming a routine act into a sensory ritual

Our bodies respond instantly to stimulation, which is why our muscles soften and our minds relax when we’re touched.

Refocus your mind

One technique you can try at home to re-educate the way you feel about your body is by cleansing the areas of your body that you dislike most. The trick is to imagine that someone else is bathing you or caressing your body for the first time. It takes time to override a visual image of negativity, but soon you will find it easier to appreciate and accept the loveliness of your curves, contours and the softness of your skin.
